Settlement of Afrasiab: legend and description

The ancient settlement of Afrasiab, which is located on the high hills , You can see as soon as you enter to Samarkand from the North, dates back to 7-2 centuries BC. There is an interesting fact that actually a city like Afrasiab has never existed. Residents who were living in this place called it so, because they believed in the same legend, according to which a mythic-fairy king Afrasiab founded the city there. In fact, this place was a settlement of pre-Mongol Samarkand, where actually city life was seething until about 1220 before the Mongols destroyed it.

Many invaders attacked Samarkand, but the most devastating of these for the city was the RAID of Genghis Khan. He literally ordered to wipe the city off the face of the earth. Residents were so shocked and frightened by this act of Great Mongols that in consequence they did not dare to recover a settlement on these hills. And up to this day, Samarkand surrounds by Crescent the waste ground, once busy and bustling – site of ancient settlement of Afrasiab.

During excavations, archaeologists found that Afrasiab city actually included fortress, surrounding settlement, inner city and suburbs. On the territory of the inner city, archaeologists discovered the quarters of artisans and locals, the mosque and the remains of the Palace of the ruler of Samarkand, dating around the7th,8th centuries , where was found striking frescoes, depicting the events that took place in the city. Also on the territory of the ancient city the “Afrasiab ” Museum is situated, where all archaeological findings are demonstrated which were made on the place of the ancient city.
